About Balenciaga

Founded in 1917

Balenciaga was founded in 1917 by Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastián, Spain. Widely regarded as one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century, Cristóbal Balenciaga was called "the master of us all" by Christian Dior and "the only couturier in the truest sense" by Coco Chanel. His sculptural, architectural approach to garment construction — favoring bold volumes, precise cuts, and minimalist aesthetics — revolutionized women's fashion and laid the groundwork for modern luxury design. The brand operated its legendary Paris atelier from 1937 until Cristóbal's retirement in 1968, after which it remained dormant for nearly two decades.

The brand was revived in 1986 and eventually acquired by the Kering luxury group in 2001. Under the creative direction of Nicolas Ghesquière (1997-2012) and later Alexander Wang (2012-2015), Balenciaga reclaimed its position in the luxury fashion firmament. But it was under the direction of Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia, appointed in 2015, that Balenciaga underwent a radical transformation that reshaped the relationship between luxury fashion and footwear. Demna introduced a series of sneakers that became instant cultural phenomena: the Triple S (2017) — an exaggerated, triple-stacked "dad shoe" that launched the chunky sneaker trend; the Speed Trainer (2016) — a sock-like knit sneaker with a molded sole; and the Track (2018) — a multi-panel hiking-inspired trainer that merged outdoor function with high-fashion form.

Balenciaga's footwear has redefined what luxury sneakers can be. Price tags routinely exceed $1,000, yet limited releases sell out instantly and command significant resale premiums. The brand's willingness to embrace ugliness, irony, and subversion — presenting worn-out sneakers on the runway and collaborating with Crocs, Adidas, and even The Simpsons — has made Balenciaga one of the most talked-about names in fashion. While its sneakers are polarizing, their influence on the broader industry is undeniable: the entire luxury sneaker category, from Louis Vuitton to Dior, now operates in the shadow of Balenciaga's maximalist silhouette revolution.
