About Under Armour
Founded in 1996
Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former University of Maryland football player who grew tired of changing sweat-soaked cotton T-shirts during practice. Working from his grandmother's basement in Washington, D.C., Plank developed a moisture-wicking synthetic compression shirt that kept athletes cool, dry, and light. He drove up and down the East Coast selling HeatGear shirts from the trunk of his car, and the brand's breakthrough came when a photo of NFL quarterback Jeff George wearing Under Armour appeared on the cover of USA Today in 1999.
The brand's rapid ascent was fueled by football and training apparel, with Under Armour becoming synonymous with performance compression gear. The iconic "Protect This House" marketing campaign and partnerships with athletes like Tom Brady, Stephen Curry, and Michael Phelps established Under Armour as a legitimate rival to Nike and Adidas. The company went public in 2005 and expanded aggressively into footwear, launching its first football cleats in 2006 and basketball shoes in 2010. The Curry signature line — developed with NBA superstar Stephen Curry starting in 2015 — became the brand's flagship footwear franchise.
Under Armour has expanded into running with its HOVR cushioning platform, Flow technology (eliminating the rubber outsole), and the SlipSpeed all-in-one training shoe. While the brand has faced challenges maintaining market share in the highly competitive footwear space, its commitment to innovation — particularly in connected fitness through its acquisition of MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, and Endomondo — shows a vision that extends beyond apparel. Under Armour remains the definitive brand for athletes who train hard and expect their gear to work as hard as they do.
