About Jordan

Founded in 1984

Jordan Brand was born in 1984 when Nike signed a rookie Michael Jordan to a landmark endorsement deal worth $500,000 per year — an unprecedented sum at the time. Designer Peter Moore created the Air Jordan 1, a shoe so boldly coloured in black and red that the NBA banned it, fining Jordan $5,000 per game. Nike turned the controversy into a marketing masterstroke with the slogan "The NBA can't stop you from wearing them," and a cultural icon was born. The Air Jordan 1 launched in 1985 and sold $126 million in its first year.

The brand's design legacy was cemented when Tinker Hatfield took over with the Air Jordan 3 in 1988 — introducing the Jumpman logo, elephant print, and visible Air cushioning. Hatfield's run through the Air Jordan 14 produced some of the most revered designs in sneaker history, including the 4, 5, 6, and 11 — the latter being Michael Jordan's personal favorite. The brand officially spun off as a separate division of Nike in 1997 and has since signed athletes across basketball (Russell Westbrook, Luka Dončić, Zion Williamson), baseball, and football.

Today Jordan Brand generates over $6 billion in annual revenue and transcends sport entirely. Retro releases of classic Air Jordans command huge resale premiums, and collaborations with Travis Scott, Off-White, Union LA, and A Ma Maniére have elevated the brand to the apex of sneaker culture. The Jumpman logo is one of the most recognized symbols in the world, representing excellence, style, and the enduring legacy of the greatest basketball player of all time.
